Bendigo Bank debuts podcast featuring First Nations Elders in NAIDOC Week
Bendigo Bank today announced the release of a limited podcast series, ‘A yarn with our Elders,’ premiering next Monday 3 July in NAIDOC Week.
NAIDOC Week encourages all Australians to come together to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements from 2 July to 9 July.
Having recently launched its Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan, Bendigo Bank is focused on its commitment to create a more equitable and inclusive future. This four-part series provides a platform for First Nations Elders Uncle Shane Charles, Uncle Graham Atkinson, Uncle Vic Chapman, and Aunty Zeta Thomson to share their stories.
Bendigo Bank Inclusion Specialist and Munanjali woman, Simone Sexton, who hosts the podcast, says each instalment brings NAIDOC Week 2023’s theme, For our Elders, to life.
“Listeners will hear from our Elders the importance of storytelling, the challenges and opportunities facing First Nations communities today and, looking to the future, discussion of how we can all work together to create a more reconciled Australia,” she said.
“We have so much to learn from each other, and this podcast is one more way we can be a part of educating all Australians about the rich history, diverse culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”
“It is said in our culture that when an Elder passes away we lose an entire library of knowledge and wisdom, the telling of our ‘Songlines’ is transferred verbally by Elders.”
“Podcasting is a modern way of telling and sharing these traditional stories, and a fantastic step forward as we continue to walk together on our journey to reconciliation. As custodians of the oldest continuing culture in the world, the knowledge and wisdom of our Elders is invaluable.”
All four episodes ‘A yarn with our Elders’ will be available to stream on all major podcast platforms on Monday 3 July, or listeners can subscribe on the Bendigo Bank website from 3 July.
